Our approach
We employ a prevention system designed by the a noted Southern California medical group of orthopaedic surgeons and sports professionals. We refer to the program as PEP, which stands for ‘Prevent Injury and Enhance Performance’. PEP emphasizes strength of the core and utilizes plyometric/flexibility/agility training. We accept child athletes in all types of sports, although most of our clientele participate in soccer, basketball, lacrosse, field & ice hockey, and baseball.
In his recent book, Warrior Girls, 2008, Michael Sokolove documents in convincing detail the epidemic of major sports injuries like ACL tears suffered by young soccer players. In girls, the incidence of injury is 8 times that of boys. Doctor Mehment C. Oz is quoted as saying “Warrior Girls brings alive the reality that our daughters are suffering and epidemic of devastating sports injuries that can be prevented with exercise programs”. Roger and I are committed to helping you, the coaches and concerned parents to reduce those injuries.
Our typical PEP program consists of 5 separate training phases; (1) Warm-up prior to practice or game (2) Stretching, emphasizing dynamic stretches over static (3) Strength training of the ‘core’, generally from the neck down to the gluets (4) Plyometric exercises that build power, strength and speed (5) Agility movements to improve/enhance body position referred to as proprioception, defined as the unconscious perception of movement and spatial orientation arising from stimuli within the body itself.
We can work in a group/team setting at a playing field. Our set up is easy, quick and efficient and usually is only a 15 to 20 minute additional commitment to the time devoted to the practice or game. We recommend a minimum of 3 sessions per week in order to benefit from the program.
We also accept one-on-one clients and groups of two on up off-site from the playing field. We design a specific program for each child athlete based on their own unique abilities and bio mechanical musculature using state of the art measurement equipment and techniques. We help each client develop their own personal goals and objectives. For some, it’s to have fun and not get hurt. For others, it’s to make it to the travel team, to the High School Varsity, to the Olympic Development Team or a full-ride college scholarship. We provide immediate and periodic feedback, with realistic analysis, changing and adapting the program as the child develops physically.
